J.D. Power recently released the results of its 2015 U.S. Car Tech Choice Study, where it surveyed 5,300 consumers across the U.S. on technologies they want most in their cars. A total of 59 features were included in the survey, across six major car tech categories:
- Entertainment and connectivity
- Comfort and convenience
- Collision protection
- Driving assistance
- Navigation
- Energy efficiency
Even though sexier car tech gets most of the attention in the media, U.S. drivers are most interested in collision protection technologies that can keep them safe in daily driving conditions – 3 out of the top 5 fell into this category. The other 2 were in the driving assistance and comfort and convenience categories.

J.D. Power also surveyed consumers on their preference for Apple Car and Android Auto. The survey found that their choice is uniquely dependent on which smartphone they use. Because owners of luxury vehicles tend to own iPhones, manufacturers of these vehicles may choose to only integrate Apple CarPlay, and risk alienating Android smartphone users. Non-luxury vehicle owners are split almost equally across iOS and Android, so these manufacturers could integrate both, and then offer their customers a choice at the point of purchase.
