Before You Start
Inspect the car cold, in daylight, and on dry pavement when possible. This sheet helps organize your notes before you decide whether to negotiate, walk away, or pay for a mechanic's pre-purchase inspection.
Vehicle Details
Print one per vehicleExterior Body and Paint
- VIN tags, door stickers, and title records appear consistent
- Body panels line up evenly
- Paint color and texture match across panels
- No overspray on trim, seals, lights, or wheel wells
- No bubbling paint around rockers, arches, windshield, or hatch
- No hail dents, deep scratches, cracked lights, or broken trim
- Glass is free of spreading chips or cracks
- Tires match by size and have even tread depth
Interior
- Seats, belts, and airbags appear intact
- Carpets are dry under mats and in cargo area
- No mildew smell, heavy fragrance, or water staining
- Dashboard lights illuminate at key-on, then turn off after start
- Windows, locks, mirrors, seats, and sunroof work
- HVAC blows hot and cold from all modes
- Infotainment, cameras, sensors, and charging ports work
- Spare tire, jack, inflator kit, and key tools are present
Engine Bay
- Cold start is smooth with no excessive smoke
- Oil level and condition look normal
- Coolant is clean and at the correct level
- No oil, coolant, fuel, or power steering leaks
- Belts and hoses are not cracked, swollen, or wet
- Battery terminals are clean and secure
- Engine mounts do not clunk under light throttle/brake load
- No fresh pressure-wash evidence hiding active leaks
Undercarriage
- Frame rails and pinch welds are straight
- No heavy rust on structural areas, brake lines, or suspension mounts
- No active leaks from engine, transmission, transfer case, or differential
- Exhaust is secure and not heavily patched
- Shocks/struts are dry and not bouncing excessively
- Brake pads, rotors, and lines look serviceable
- Tires show no cupping, cords, or sidewall bubbles
- Tow hitch, recovery points, and underbody panels are secure
Drivetrain
- Transmission engages drive and reverse promptly
- Shifts are smooth under light and moderate throttle
- Clutch takeup is smooth, if manual
- No vibration under acceleration or deceleration
- AWD/4WD modes engage correctly, if equipped
- No clicking on tight turns
- No whining, grinding, or clunking from axles or differential
Electrical
- Scan tool shows no current or recently cleared warning codes
- Headlights, brake lights, turn signals, fog lights, and hazards work
- Wipers, washers, horn, and rear defroster work
- Key fobs, remote start, alarm, and push-button start work
- Driver assists operate without warning messages
- Trailer wiring works, if equipped
- Charging voltage is normal with lights and HVAC on
Road Test
- Vehicle tracks straight with steering wheel centered
- No pull, shimmy, thump, or vibration at city and highway speeds
- Brakes stop straight without pulsing or grinding
- Engine reaches operating temperature and stays there
- Acceleration is clean with no misfire or hesitation
- Cruise control and driver assists work safely
- No warning lights return after the drive
- Parking brake holds on an incline
Documents and Title Checks
- Seller name matches title or dealer paperwork
- Title is present and not branded unless disclosed
- VIN matches title, dashboard, door sticker, and service records
- Lien release is present, if applicable
- Maintenance records support mileage and claimed repairs
- Recall status has been checked
- Emissions or inspection status is current where required
- Bill of sale terms match the negotiated price and included items
